Scalp micro-pigmentation (SMP) is also known as Hair Tattooing. This minimally invasive technique deposits dots of dark pigment into the scalp. The results resemble the appearance of a buzz cut. This method can help thinning hair look fuller and thicker. It gives an illusion of short stubble throughout the scalp for clients with partial or complete baldness.
The SMP device works similarly to an electric tattoo gun. It embeds pigment into the scalp and can be a long-lasting solution. The pigment's lifespan largely depends on each individual and the type of pigment used for the treatment.
SMP is popular among clients who suffer from alopecia, hair loss from aging, pattern baldness, hormonal hair loss, and even cancer. The pigment deposits can fill in the gaps of a receding hairline and bald patches, as well as any scarring from hair transplant surgery.
Before the session, every client will have to consult with their provider. They need to discuss the area requiring treatment, the color pigment to be used, and the number of sessions required to attain the desired results. In some cases, clients may need to shave their heads before the SMP session. Patients must wash their scalps well before the treatment as they will not be able to get the scalp wet for a few days after the procedure.
The session begins with applying a topical numbing cream or injecting local anesthesia into the scalp. The provider will then use the microneedling tool to deposit the pigment according to the treatment plan discussed. The provider will shade and stipple the pigment, creating a natural hairline and texture. They will also use different pigment shades and hues with varying needle sizes to attain the desired look.
SMP requires a few sessions to complete. The first session usually revolves around outlining the hairline. The next time practitioners will focus on increasing fullness in the tattooed hair follicles. A third or fourth session may be necessary for adjustments. On average, each client will require 2-4 sessions spread over a few weeks.
The results will require minimal maintenance and no lifestyle changes. Possible side effects include bleeding, infection, scarring, redness, itching, burning, dryness, allergic reactions, and hair loss.
