Plasma skin treatment involves using plasma energy to tighten or lighten the skin. The pioneer and, so far, a single brand name for this treatment is Renuvion. There are two devices in use; Renuvion (J Plasma) for tightening and Renuvion Dermal Handpiece for facial rejuvenation and dermal resurfacing. It involves a combination of helium gas and radiofrequency energy, which cause the skin to contract.

The process uses controlled heat to target regions of the skin, while the helium cools the skin at the same time. The precision of this device ensures that surrounding tissues aren’t damaged. The device is inserted in small incisions made in the treatment area. This allows the energy to be directed beneath the skin. The size of the incisions limits the amount of
scarring seen post-treatment.

Renuvion (J Plasma) targets imperfections, smoothes out wrinkles, tightens skin, and corrects sun damage on the face. It can tighten moderately loose skin in the neck region and contour the lower back, arms, and thighs. The process stimulates collagen production, which will continue to tighten the skin for months after the treatment.

The treatment takes up to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.  Recovery time can last up to a week but doesn’t require a stay in the hospital. Results can last years. The Renuvion Dermal Handpiece, branded as Facial Renewal, is used to treat wrinkles and loose skin on the face and neck. Doctors describe transformative results. The procedure is not recommended for people with darker skin, only for patients with Fitzpatrick skin types 1, 2, and 3.

While some doctors consider Renuvion a complementary treatment, the FDA highlights that their clearance does not extend to procedures that involve liposuction.
