A lip lift is a surgical procedure that can be a permanent alternative to lip fillers. The process is usually done in a clinic by a professional surgeon. It aims to shorten the distance between the top lip and the base of the nose. As this distance decreases, the pink lip becomes more visible in the upper lift. This creates the look of a fuller and plumper lip, showing more upper teeth when the lips are at rest. Instead of adding volume as fillers do, a lip lift adds height to give the same illusion of a plump lip.
Depending on the shape of the patient's lip, the surgeon will adjust and customize the technique to achieve the patient's aesthetic goals. There are a few techniques used in a lip lift, and one of them is the direct lip lift. The surgeon will first cut a small strip of skin above the lip and then pull the upper lip upwards to show more pink tissue and create a pouty look. This technique will create a more defined outline but will also leave a scar above the lip.
The most common technique used is a subnasal bullhorn, which gets its name from the shape of the incision made right at the bottom of the nose. The bullhorn-shaped incision is less likely to leave a noticeable scar as it is hidden well. The lip then gets pulled towards the nose and sutured in place.
The corner lip lift creates a more upturned smile even when the lips are resting. Surgeons make incisions at the corner of the lips, where they remove a tiny strip of skin to create a “smile” appearance.
Lastly, the Italian lip lift reduces scarring as two incisions are made under the nostrils to pull the lips upwards.
A lip lift is an excellent option for older patients as aging naturally decreases the size of the lips. It does not work well on candidates with a narrow distance between their noses and lips. Usually, the procedure requires local anesthetic, and the stitches will have to remain on for a week.
Swelling and bruising are expected, and patients should refrain from exercising, smoking and sleeping face down. While minimal risk is involved, some possible complications are blood loss, nerve damage and an allergic reaction to the anesthetic.
