Clear braces offer a more discreet alternative to traditional metal braces. One example is Invisalign. This treatment straightens the teeth, improves the bite, realigns any overcrowding, and closes up gaps between teeth. Unlike metal braces, Invisalign uses transparent acrylic molds that fit the teeth.

Each aligner tray can straighten out the teeth by adding pressure and realigning them into the desired position. The trays should be worn at all times except when eating, drinking hot liquids or drinks that could stain the teeth, and when brushing and flossing. After consuming any sugary or acidic drinks, patients should brush their teeth before re-inserting the trays.

Doctors recommend their patients wear the trays for at least 20-22 hours a day to see significant changes in their teeth alignment.

Before getting the trays, patients must first schedule a dental appointment. The dentists will take X-rays, photos and a mold of their mouth. They will digitally map out a personalized treatment plan for each patient. In some cases, patients may need their tooth to be slightly polished down if it is too large to fit into proper alignment. Patients will receive a few sets of trays, which will have to be replaced every two weeks. The number of trays each patient receives will depend on their customized treatment plan. Each set of trays will apply pressure to the teeth and slowly move them into position.

Patients may feel slightly uncomfortable with each new tray, but the pain should subside after a few days. Some cases can be completed in just six months, while others may take up to 1-2 years. This will depend on the severity of the patient's misalignment. After the treatment, patients must continue to wear a retainer to ensure the straightened teeth maintain their position. Not all patients are suitable for Invisalign. Some more complex orthodontic conditions may require traditional metal braces.

Another example of clear braces is ceramic braces. These work similarly to metal braces but use tooth-colored brackets to look more discreet. Dentists still insert a wire across the teeth, and rubber bands straighten and realign the teeth. This treatment option requires patients to visit their dentist every 4-6 weeks.
