Some patients who have gone through a breast augmentation procedure can be unsatisfied with the results.

Breast implant revision can help fix complications from a previous breast augmentation surgery. These can include implant rupture, capsular contracture and saggy or asymmetrical breasts. It can also help to correct malposition or implant migration. Another complication is symmastia. This is when the implants are placed too close to each other, making the breasts look unnatural.

Patients can also opt for a revision to further increase the size of their breasts or to replace their saline implants with silicone ones. Before surgery, patients can choose their new implant size, shape and material. For larger implants, surgeons will need to expand the breast tissue before augmentation.

Unfortunately, some patients may suffer from capsular contracture. This is a complication where hardened scar tissue surrounds the implant and squeezes it. The surgeon will usually remove this tissue before replacing the implant.

Every breast implant revision is different. Each procedure is tailored to the complications and needs of the patient.

The procedure lasts one to three hours. It is usually an outpatient surgery that requires general anesthetic.

Surgeons can use different types of incisions for the operation.

These can involve a vertical incision to lift the breast, a horizontal incision under the breast, and/or an incision made around the areola. They generally create the revision incision using the same scar as the previous surgery to minimize scarring. Once the surgeon has fixed the complications, they close the site with sutures and bandage it with surgical dressing. Patients have to wear a compression bra after the surgery to support the chest and prevent inflammation. Sometimes, a drainage tube will be inserted to remove excess fluids while recovering.

Patients will be discharged on the same day. They need to refrain from raising their arms and also have to avoid strenuous activities. Swelling can last up to 6 weeks before the breasts feel more natural. Results will be noticeable after three months.
