A back lift is a surgical procedure that can help shape and define the upper and lower back. The process usually removes any loose skin and excess fat on the back to tighten the body. A back lift can target the upper or lower back using differing techniques.

A lower back lift can sometimes be performed with other procedures. This procedure removes excess skin in the lower back while tightening and firming up the outer thigh and bottom. It is often coupled with a tummy tuck, a thigh lift, or outer thigh liposuction.

An upper back lift targets the built-up fat in the mid to upper section of the back, which usually extends to the sides and chest area. Surgeons sometimes combine this procedure with breast or upper abdominoplasty surgery.

When it comes to upper back lift surgery, two techniques can be used. The bra-line back lift is a technique that will create a horizontal incision along the bra line. It helps to get rid of back rolls and improve the shape of the upper back down to the waist. The procedure is relatively short, spanning 2-3 hours. The incision creates a visible scar that patients can cover up with a bra or a bikini top.

The other technique is the vertical back lift, also known as vertical torsoplasty. Surgeons make an incision from the underarms to the hip bone. They remove excess skin and fat from the back and the upper abdomen. The procedure takes longer than the bra-line technique. It can last up to 5 hours. The incisions in the torso are covered by the arms.

The best candidates for the back lift procedure have either had a dramatic weight loss or suffer from skin laxity due to natural aging. Patients who have undergone significant weight loss are often left with loose skin and excess fat. A combination of the upper and lower back lift is most effective for in these cases. The procedure isusually either an outpatient surgery or an overnight stay with general anesthetic.

Patients may experience swelling and soreness after the procedure. They will be able to  walk after a few hours, but full recovery will take several weeks. Doctors note  that patients can return to work within 3-4 days. Still, surgical drains may be inserted to ensure proper drainage of excess fluid.
