A gum lift is a useful option for patients who have a gummy smile. A gum lift, also known as laser gum contouring or gum reshaping, removes any excess gum tissue and creates a better contour around your teeth. A gummy smile can occur when the gums do not pull back after the adult teeth grow in or if patients have a short upper lip.

A gum lift is a cosmetic option that helps create a more proportionate tooth-to-gum ratio. Patients can also seek this procedure for medical reasons. Bacteria and plaque often build up in excess gum tissues, increasing the risk of gum disease. Reducing the excess tissue can help keep the gums healthy. Some patients suffer from receding gums, which can be treated as a gum lift.

Receding gums will gradually expose the tooth root, which can cause sensitivity and root decay. Receding gum treatments sometimes include a gum graft to increase gum tissue in the area.

The in-office procedure may take 1-2 hours. First, patients undergo x-ray examinations to check their bone levels. The x-ray helps to determine the appropriate amount of gum tissue that needs modifying. Doctors use local anesthesia to numb the site, and most providers prefer using a soft-tissue laser when removing excessive tissue. The device looks like a handheld pen that’s used to remove and shape the gums around the teeth. This method is safe and effective as it reduces bleeding and the risk of infections. As the laser moves over the gum, the tissue reduction exposes more tooth surface.

If the procedure includes adding tissue rather than removing it, the surgeon obtains tissues from other areas of the mouth and attaches them to the affected site. These cases require grafting, and they may rely on sutures during the healing period.

Patients may experience swelling and discomfort after their procedure. This can be alleviated using pain relievers and an ice compress. As the site heals in the first few days, patients need to refrain from strenuous activity or hard foods.

Patients can also rinse their mouths with warm salt water to prevent inflammation and infections.
