Aqualyx is a non-invasive injectable solution that targets stubborn pockets of fat and breaks them down. It is ideal for patients who want to shape and contour their bodies without invasive procedures like liposuction. It is not FDA approved in the US.
Aqualyx is mainly used to treat a double chin but can also treat the jawline, knee, elbow, upper arms, muffin top, or other smaller areas. The treatment will require multiple injections per site, so it is not recommended for larger areas. Suitable candidates lead a healthy lifestyle but have resistant areas of fat that do not respond to exercise and diet.
Aqualyx is a solution that is a modified compound of deoxycholic acid, similar to a natural substance made by the human liver. Deoxycholic acid can damage fat cells and remove them from the body. The solution will first break down the fat cell membrane into clear fatty fluids, which will then be excreted through the lymphatic system.
An Aqualyx procedure can take up to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. Practitioners administer it through a cannula that releases the solution into the site. Patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and redness immediately after, but these symptoms will subside in 48-72 hours. If the pain and discomfort intensify, patients can take over-the-counter painkillers. However, they should avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, like ibuprofen, because they can make you bleed and bruise. Patients will see visible results after 1-2 sessions, but usually, eight sessions spaced out four weeks apart is necessary. Final results can take up to six weeks to show.
After the procedure, doctors recommend ultrasound treatment to promote more effective results. The ultrasound procedure increases the speed with which the fat is removed from the body. Patients should follow a healthy diet and drink at least 1-1.5 litres of water daily to help flush the fat from the body. They also need to wear a compression garment to support the treated area.
